"We eat meat, and you eat cabbage!"

On July 24, 1959, the legendary “Kitchen Debates” took place - a series of improvised dialogues between the Vice President of the United States Richard Nixon and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR Nikita Khrushchev.

We have already laid out a video of those debates, and today we want to share with you interesting joint photos of Nixon and Khrushchev, not only at the meeting in Sokolniki, but also outside of them. By the way, they are called "kitchen" because they were held at the exhibition in the "kitchen of a typical American home."

Before the exhibition, Khrushchev and Nixon rode on a boat on the Moscow River, periodically sailing to the swimmers. Nikita Sergeevich, every time he frowned mockly, shouted loudly to his fellow countrymen:
- Well, tell us, are you enslaved or not? Are you slaves?
- Not! We are not slaves! Slaves are not us!

Khrushchev turned a pleased face to Nixon, slyly asking:
- Do these people look like slaves of communism?

Nixon only smiled slyly in response, shaking hands reaching for him from all sides.

Walking through the exhibition in the company of Khrushchev, Nixon stopped near the model of the kitchen of a suburban American home, where a long argument broke out between politicians. According to photographer Elliott Erwitt, who shot the famous photograph, where Nixon jabbed his finger at Khrushchev, two phrases slipped into the debate that were not included in any of the publications.

Nixon said: "We are rich and you are poor. We eat meat, and you eat cabbage!". Khrushchev answered simply: "Fuck you!».
