On the fields of the First World War, Hildenbrand made quite a few shots that glorified him. He was one of 19 official military photographers accredited by the German authorities.

In the 1930s, Hildenbrand became an employee of National Geographic magazine. By order of the publication, he traveled to Poland, from where he brought an outstanding series of color photographs.
